The Vials of the Wrath of God
Revelation 16:3-7
And the second angel poured out his vial upon
the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead
man: and every living soul died in the sea.
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the
rivers and fountains of waters; and they became
blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou
art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and
shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and
prophets, and thou hast given them blood to
drink; for they are worthy.
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even
so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy
judgments.

The Vials of the Wrath of God
Admiral Nelson and the Victory
God used the tactical genius of
Admiral Horatio Nelson to defeat
numerically superior forces. When
his career finished in 1805, Britain
completely dominated the seas and
did so for the next 50 years.
The Vials of the Wrath of God
In August 1798 a
French fleet under
Vice Admiral
d'Aigailliers was
defeated by a
smaller British
armada commanded
by Admiral Nelson at
the Battle of the Nile
at Abu Qir, Egypt.
The defeat left
Napoleon stranded
in Egypt, and led to a
coalition of
European states
against France.

The Vials of the Wrath of God
Prelude to the Battle of Trafalgar
Nelson waited 80 kms
offshore for the French
and Spanish fleets to
emerge from Cadiz. A
chain of frigates and
larger vessels signalled
what was happening. A
key to Nelson’s victory
was the prompt receipt of
information and decisive
action in response.

The enemy fleet was

disorderly line and
pulverised it. The vanguard

The Death of Admiral Nelson
Nelson was carried
below deck and
covered his face with
a handkerchief to
conceal his identity so
he would not be given
preferential
treatment. Other
injured men
recognised him and
insisted he be treated
first. His wound was
fatal. The bullet had
lodged in his spine. He

August 15, 1769, the
second of eight children –
was there in 1789 when the
Revolution began.

The Vials of the Wrath of God
Napoleon’s Rise to Power
 After the Reign of Terror ended in 1794, Napoleon
tried to stay above the turmoil of French politics.
 In 1795 he was invited by the Directory to
suppress a number of internal revolts.
 His success on the Italian front in 1796-97 marked
him out for future leadership.
 He created the Cispadane Republic in Italy and
declared himself President in October 1797.
 In 1799 Napoleon formed an alliance with some
leading politicians and overthrew the Directory.
 He became “First Consul” of the new governing
body called the Consulate – aged 30.

The Pope Given Blood to Drink
 After defeating the Austrians in Lombardy,
Napoleon turned on the Papacy.
 The Pope gathered an army of fanatical peasants
and attacked the French.
 Defeated at Faenza and Ancona, and with
Napoleon advancing on Rome, the Pope sued for
peace.
 At enormous cost, and under utterly humiliating
terms a treaty was granted.
 The Papacy and his adherents “drank blood” but
worse was to come in the 5th Vial judgements.
The Vials of the Wrath of God
Final Phase of 3rd Vial
 After his triumph in Italy, Napoleon looked for
new conquests and decided on Egypt - 1798.
 Though militarily successful, the campaign
was a disaster due to Britain’s supremacy on
the sea.
 In Napoleon’s absence the Austrians with help
from Russia had retaken Italy with huge
slaughter and suffering on both sides.
 He forsook his army in Egypt and returned to
Paris where by turn of events he became First
Consul after the coup of 1799.

More Blood to Drink
 Napoleon gathered an army, crossed the Alps
and retook Italy in the campaign of 1800.
 Passage of the Alps via St Bernard by a fully
equipped army of 60,000 said to be impossible.
 Napoleon left Geneva on 8 May and arrived
unopposed at Milan on 2 June 1800.
 The Austrians were defeated at the battle of
Montebello and then again decisively at Marengo
on 14 June.
 The Austrians suffered immense losses and
withdrew leaving Italy to Napoleon.
 France and Austria signed the treaty of Luneville
on 8 January 1801 bringing 4 years peace.

“Instrument of Providence”
On crowning himself Emperor in December 1804,
Napoleon said:
“I am the instrument of
Providence, she will use me as
long as I accomplish her
designs, then she will break me
as a glass.”
The Vials of the Wrath of God
True and Righteous Judgements
 Napoleon was an unwitting instrument of
judgement on the Holy Roman Empire and the
Catholic Church.
 While he fought against them he enjoyed great
success – when he turned to fight Britain, Egypt
and Russia he suffered defeat!
 His campaigns brought untold suffering to Italy,
Austria and Prussia – fitting vengeance for the
blood of God’s servants and anti-Papal
witnesses who had been persecuted
mercilessly in previous centuries.
