Imperialism in
Latin America
Political Instability in Latin
America
• Caudillos (military leaders during the wars for
independence) led the nations as dictators.
• Even without dictation, the Latin Americans were
uneager to participate in the government.
• The poor workers’ living conditions were as bad as
slaves.
– The rich had most of the land, but they failed to
make any intellectual use of them.
• Thus they were economically and socially deprived from
development.
Economic Colonialism
(start of neo colonialism)
• Europe and America depended on many of Latin America’s
exports
– Because Latin America’s exports also brought in other
imports, they had no need to industrialize
– Latin America failed to use their income to improve their
condition and used loans from other countries, causing
them to be in great debt to the US and Europe.
• Monroe Doctrine: document that restricts Europe’s colonial
powers on Latin America.
– This was to prevent intervention by Europe that would
pay the debt for the colonies.
Independence of Cuba
• Cuba was one of the last colony of Spain
in Latin America
• Cubans, seeking independence, held a 10
year-long war against Spain.
– No hope was seen for Cuba against
Spain and was on the verge of giving up.
• The Spanish - American War led to
Cuba’s Independence from Spain.
Spanish – American War
• The First Media War
– The press spread news about Spain’s brutality and immorality
through out the United States.
– News about war = citizen’s interest = money
– The journalists succeeded as America entered the Cuban war.
(Spanish – American War)
• Ended within 4 months with America gaining Cuba’s
Independence. Spain’s military was worn out from the 10 years
of war with Cuba.
• Cuba gained “independence” along with other colonies of
Spain: Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines
• Declared America’s superiority and power across the Pacific.
The American’s Imperialism
• America repressed the newly gained “independence” of
Cuba, as they bound them with their power.
– Constructed the United States Navy Base in Cuba
• Constructed the Panama Canal
- US brings up a revolution in Panama against their
oppressor, Colombia.
- Along with the US military, Panama gains independence
and gratefulness, US receives a small portion of the land to
build the Panama Canal, influencing America to the world.
• The canal was open to ships from around the world.
• Roosevelt Corollary: It gave America justification to
intervene with Latin American countries.
