Kinds of Neurons
Sensory Neurons (a.k.a. Afferent Neurons) carry incoming
information from the sense receptors to the CNS.
Motor Neurons (a.k.a. Efferent Neurons) carry outgoing
information from the CNS to muscles and glands.
Interneurons connect the two neurons (between).

The Brain and Neural Networks
Interconnected neurons form networks in the
brain. Theses networks are complex and modify
with growth and experience (“use it or lose it”).

The Endocrine System
Chapter 2
The Endocrine System
The Endocrine
System is the body’s
“slow” chemical
communication
system.
Communication is
carried out by
hormones
synthesized by a set of
glands.
The Endocrine System
• Some concepts about Hormones
– Travel through the bloodstream
– Some are chemically similar to
neurotransmitters
• Pituitary Gland = “the master gland” gets orders
from the brain (hypothalamus = “the master’s
master”)
– Basic Feedback system:
• Brain (hypothalamus) pituitary
other endocrine glands hormones brain
• Overall, the Endocrine and Nervous Systems
constantly interact with one another
