Germany Takes the Blame
Treaty of Versailles
League of Nations created to maintain the peace. America
did not join. Germany & Russia excluded
Territorial Losses: Germany loses western land along French
border. Loses all of its overseas colonies.
Military Restrictions: Limits size of German military.
Prohibited from importing or manufacturing weapons.
War Guilt: Sole responsibility placed on Germany. Forced
to pay $33 Billion to Allies.

HW: Germany paid off WWI debt Sept 30, 2010.

1917 Russia has the first Communist Revolution. Bolsheviks versus the White Army/
Civil War.

Rowlatt Act- imprison up to 2 years with no trial. Violated

Amritsar Massacre- 400 killed in nonviolent protest became
tipping point in Nationalist wave.
Gandhi: “Great Soul”- adopted civil disobedience as a weapon for
change.

Middle East
Ottoman Empire (Turkey) loses its empire 1918
1919- Turkey becomes a Republic/ 1st president Mustafa Kemal
(AKA Ataturk)
Transforms Turkey into modern nation: 1) separation of religion
& government 2) abolished religious courts/ created European
system of law 3) industrialized industrialization.
1921 Persia revolts against Russia & British forces. Modernization
but not democracy. 1935 becomes Iran
1932 Saudi Arabia: Arabian family is renamed Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia with Western help. Islam was central to rule.
Modernization was limited and no effort to bring democracy.

1920 and 1930’s British and American petroleum (like
BP!) discovered oil in the desert. 2/3 of the known oil
deposits.

No clear theory except for nationalism and survival of the
fittest.
Attacked communists and socialists. Banned Democracy.
Wins support of middle class, aristocracy and industrialists.
Hitler Rises to Power in
Germany
Hitler served in WWI. Joined a right-wing party known as
National Socialist German Workers’ Party- NAZI for short
1919
1923- jailed for treason. Writes Mein Kampf (My Struggle)
sets forth his beliefs and goals for Germany
Aryans are the Master Race
Vowed to regain German land (lebensraum)
During the Great Depression his ideas became very
powerful late 1920’s
Hitler Becomes Chancellor
Nazis become largest political party by 1932
1933, President appoints Hitler as Chancellor
Reichstag building incident
Nazis win majority in Parliament- turns Germany into a Totalitarian state.
Uses Storm Troopers to suppress all other political parties/ opponents.
Took over economy. Ban strikes unions, Propaganda, Censorship,
Indoctrination
Blames Jews (less than 1%) for economic woes
Other countries
fall to dictators
Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania become
Dictatorships.
1935 Czechoslovakia, only democracy to remain in
