WWII Ends WWII Ends D-Day was a success, but the allied forces needed more • Needed to liberate France and advance into Germany Battle of the Bulge • Germans surrounded the American occupied city of Bastogne General Patton came with reinforcements • Broke the German lines • After 3 weeks of fighting, the Germans began to retreat • Nothing was in the way of Americans entering Germany WWII Ends Americans started marching into Germany • Russians were closing in on the Eastern Front Knowing defeat was inevitable, Hitler committed suicide Germany finally surrenders • V-E Day WWII Ends War is still going on in the Pacific • FDR dies in 1945 Harry S Truman takes over Immediately had to make important decisions about Japan Island Hopping • Iwo Jima Able to fire bomb Japan • Okinawa Very close to Japan WWII Ends With allies getting closer to Japan, surrender seems close • Emperor had to stay in power Truman would not accept that • Fighting continued Manhattan Project • Research project being done on atomic bomb Fully functional by 1945 WWII Ends Truman was now faced with two choices • Use bomb or continue fighting Positives and negatives to both • Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb Hiroshima first, Nagasaki second • Massive destruction Many civilians died Forces Japan to surrender • V-J Day Assignment World War II was one of the first documented wars.
