Organelles Day 3

Objective:
 SWBAT
describe the structure and function of
organelles related to protein

Catalyst:
What is the function of the
organelle which the arrow is
pointing to?


Ribosome
Ribosomes are very
small circles that
are sometimes on
the Endoplasmic
Reticulum and
sometimes floating
in the cytoplasm
 They make protein
(which the cell uses
to do all cell
activities)
 Analogy: Teachers

Ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Re-tick-you-lum
These are tubes that are
always around the
nucleus.
-Smooth ER: no
ribosomes
-Rough ER- ribosomes
-It is a passageway for
proteins.
Analogy: Hallways of

Endoplasmic Reticulum
Golgi Apparatus
It is many
flattened sacs put
together
 It packages and
ships out proteins
 Analogy:
Attendance
Office- ships
people around

Golgi
Apparatus
Golgi
Apparatus
Lysosome
Spherical vesicles
 Assists with digestion
and breaking down oldorganelles
 Think “Clean-up crew”
 Analogy: Custodians

It’s Time for….
Fill out your sheets with the words in the
word bank!
Control center of the
cell; cell’s brain
Manufactures
protein.
Controls what enters
and leaves of the
cell
Clean-up crew of the
cell.
This type of cell has
DNA floating in the
middle of the cell.
Looks like spaghetti.
Only in plant cells.
Allows for
photosynthesis to
occur.
Only in plant cells.
Outside the cell
membrane. Gives the
plants a rectangular
shape.
Power house of the
cell. Creates ATP.
Storage for food and
water. HUGE in
plants.
This is a type of
endoplasmic
reticulum WITH
ribosomes.
These are tubes
found around the
nucleus.
All organelles float in
this liquid substance.
In ALL cells.
This type of cell has
membrane bound
organelles, including
a nucleus.
Packages and
modifies protein.
This is found in the
nucleus. Instructions
for all cells.
This is usually the
shape of plant cells.
The ribosome creates
this. The cell uses this
to carry out its
functions.
This type of cell has a
cell wall, chloroplasts,
and a huge vacuole.
Also, its usually
rectangular.
This is a type of
endoplasmic
reticulum WITHOUT
ribosomes.
This is a eukaryotic
cell that is not
rectangular and has
no cell wall.
Closing


Each organelle has a specific
purpose that allows the cell to
function.
To be inducted into the biology club,
you need to know all the organelles.
Exit Question
What is the difference
between rough ER and
smooth ER?
What happens in the
ribosome?

