CELLS and ORGANELLES
Organelles
 Organs are to the body; as organelles are to cells.
 An organelle is small structure in the cell that perform a
certain task in the cell.
Common Features of Cells
Parts of a Cell Rap- Chromebook Activity
Prokaryotic vs Eularyotic Cells
Prokaryotic Cell
NO NUCLEOUS
Bacteria
Some Algae
Small cells
Eularyotic Cell
HAS A NUCLEOUS
Grass
Mushrooms
Skin
Larger Cells
NUCLEUS- The BRAIN of the CELL
Structure that directs all the activities of the cell.
 Surrounded by nuclear membrane
 Contains Chromatin – Unorganized
 Chromosomes – Organized
 - DNA - DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACIDS
 Hereditary information that stays in the nucleus
 - RNA - RIBONUCLEIC ACIDS –
 Carries codes for making proteins out of the nucleus to the
ribosomes
 Contains NUCLEOLUS
 Make the ribosomes
What are Cells?
CYTOPLASM- “jello”
- Gel-like material inside the cell membrane and
outside the nucleus.
- Contains large amounts of water - 90%
CELL MEMBRANE- Security Guard
-
Structure that forms the outer boundary of the cell
 Semipermeable
 Allows certain materials into and out of the cell
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM- (Highway)
 Transport materials in cell Acts as a conveyor belt; transports materials
 ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
 Have ribosomes attached to the surface
 RIBOSOMES – where
proteins are made (protein factory)
 SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
 No ribosomes attached
GOLGI BODIES- (Post Office/UPS truck)
Responsible for the packaging of materials that are
eventually secreted (let out) by the cell
MITOCHONDRIA
“Mighty Mitochondria” The Powerplant
Powerhouse of the cell
Site where sugar molecules are broken down and
energy is released
LYSOSOMES
(Digestive system- The Garbage Man)
Digest wastes and worn out cell parts.
CENTROSOMES
 Contain centrioles
 which are structures that play an important role in cell
reproduction
Centrosomes
VACUOLE- (storage tank)
 - Serve as a temporary storage site for materials
Vacuole
CELL WALL- (Protector)
Rigid (stiff) structure outside the cell membrane
that supports and protects the cell
Made of cellulose
 Found only in PLANT CELL
CHLOROPLAST- (Green Goblins)
Organelles in which light energy is changed into
chemical energy. (site of photosynthesis)
Important chemical – CHLOROPHYLL
 green pigment
 Found ONLY IN PLANT CELLS
Ways to remember
Nucleus– THE BRAIN
Cytoplasm- Think of the JELLY like the slime on Nickolodeon
ER
Endoplasmic Reticulum- Emergency Room
--get to the ER- Transport you on a stretcher
ER- transports material in a cell
Ribosomes- has the word RIB in it
Rib= Meat= Protein
Ribosomes make protein
Vacuole- Vacuum stores the dirt
- Vacuole stores materials temporarilty
Mitochondria– Mighty Mitochondria- the POWER HOUSE
