The Cell Cycle
Cell Cycle- The life cycle of a cell.
– The cell cycle begins when the cell is formed
and ends when the cell divides and forms new
cells.
– Before a cell can divide, it must make a copy
of its deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
– DNA is found in your chromosomes.
– DNA is your genes or hereditary material.

Chromosomes- Structures found in the
nucleus of a cell that contain your DNA
and your genes (hereditary material)
Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes or 46 chromosomes.
Each cell in your
body has 46
chromosomes
that can be found
in the nucleus of
your cells.
Sex Cells, such
as sperm and
eggs only have 23
chromosomes.
Think about it…it
makes sense.
Making More Eukaryotic Cells
Eukaryotic cells divide in three stages:
– Interphase: The cell grows and copies its
organelles and chromosomes.
– Mitosis: The cell divides the genetic material
between two cells. Mitosis is divided into four
stages:
(Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase)
– Cytokinesis: The division of the cytoplasm to
create two new daughter cells.
Mitosis
Mitosis ensures that each new cell
receives a copy of each chromosome.
