Lesson:
Igneous rocks are formed when the magma from a volcano
coolsSedimentary rocks form when eroded earth and other
materials settle in layers. These layers press down over time
to form solid rock.
Metamorphic rocks are igneous or sedimentary rocks that
have been changed by high temperatures or extreme
pressure.

Three types in geology...
WHAT ARE ROCKS?
Rock is the basic material of which Earth’s crust is
made.
WHAT KINDS OF ROCKS ARE THERE?
There are three main classes of rock:
Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
IGNEOUS
 Igneous rock forms when magma, which is melted rock found deep
inside the earth, cools and becomes solid. If magma reaches the surface,
like when a volcano erupts, it is called lava.
EXAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS:
 Basalt-This forms when lava cools and it looks like a six sided column.
(Wyoming-Devil’s Tower)
EXAMPLES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
 Granite-this rock forms from the slow crystallization of magma below
Earth’s surface. It is composed mainly of quartz, feldspar, and mica.
(Yosemite National Park-Half Dome)
SEDIMENTARY
 Sedimentary rock can take millions of years to form. Layers of sediment,
which are loose materials such as mud, sand, or small pieces of rock, will
pile up over time. The weight of the layers will cause the bottom layers
to join together and form solid rock.
EXAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCK:
 Sandstone- This rock has a lot of sand and small grain sized minerals. It
can be found near beaches and deserts.

(Arizona- Grand Canyon)
EXAMPLES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
 Limestone-this type of rock is made up of skeletal fragments of
marine organisms such as coral.
 (Philippines- Limestone Cliff)
METAMORPHIC
 Metamorphic rocks are formed when one rock is changed into another.
This happens when the original rock is heated or squeezed deep under
the ground.
EXAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCK:
 Gneiss: this rock is shale or granite that has been changed by great
pressure and heat.
(Scotland: Laxford Front)
EXAMPLES OF METAMORPHIC ROCKS
 Slate- this rock was a sedimentary rock called shale. It is composed of
clay and volcanic ash.
(Utah- Provo River)
