5th Grade Science
S5L3 – Students will diagram and label parts of various cells
Cells
This presentation will address the following
Learning goals:
Define and identify living and nonliving
Define cells
Identify the types of cells
Identify the parts of a cells and their
functions
Living Things
We are surrounded by living and non-living
things. All animals and plants are living things
and biology is the study of these living things.
A cat playing with a ball is obviously living. A
pigeon flying from tree to tree is also a living
thing.
Sometimes it is not so easy to decide. Plants
are living things but they do not play with
balls or fly. If something is living it will carry
out all of the seven activities shown opposite.
• In science, living is used to describe
anything that is or has ever been alive (dog,
flower, seed, road kill, log)
Examples
Nonliving Things
• Nonliving is used to describe anything
that is not now nor has ever been
alive (rock, mountain, glass, wristwatch).

CELLS
Cells
A cell is the basic unit of life. All living
organisms (or once living organisms) are
composed of one (unicellular) or more
(multicellular) cells.
Q. What does uni- mean?
A. One
Q. What does multi- mean?
A. Multiple, many or more than one
What is the smallest part of this living thing?
Graphic Organizer
All organisms -living thingsare made of
cells.
Cells
Cells do the
jobs that keep
organisms
alive.
Cells are the smallest
part of a living thing.
These cells are like
tiny building blocks.
Types of Cells
There are two types of cells
Animal Cell
Plant Cell
Do you notice any differences?
Animal Cell
Plant Cell
Compare and Contrast plant and animal cells.
Animal Cells
•Cell membrane
•Cytoplasm
•Vacuoles
•Nucleus
Plant Cells
•Cell wall
•Cell membrane
•Cytoplasm
•Vacuoles
•Chloroplasts
•Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Type of cell found in: ALL cells
Function: the cytoplasm is made up of a
jelly-like fluid and other structures that
surround the nucleus.
Location: Within cells
Nucleus
Function: The nucleus serves as the cell’s
command center, sending directions to the cell
to grow, mature, divide, or die. It also houses
DNA, the cell’s hereditary material.
Type of cell found in: animal and plant cells
Location: The nucleus is surrounded by a
membrane in the cytoplasm
Cell Membrane
Function: allows materials to enter and leave
the cell.
Type of cell found in: All Cells
Location: outer lining of the cell. It separates
the cell from its environment
Chloroplast
Function: food producers of the cell.
Type of cells Found in: The organelles are
only found in plant cells. Animal cells do not
have chloroplasts.
Location: in the cytoplasm
Cell Wall
Function: Support and Protection
Type of cells found in: plant cells but not
animal cells
Location: Outer layer surrounding the cell
membrane
