Subatomic Particles: The Proton
The massive brut.
Covered in this Lesson
• This lesson will explain that protons are
positively charged particles having a
mass of one amu and are found in the
nucleus of the atom.
Discovery of the Proton
• Henry Moseley in 1913 confirmed the
existence of the proton, a positively charge
particle in the atom.
• He also found when the positive charge of an
element increased by one you have a different
element.
The proton
• Protons are in the nucleus which has the vast
majority of the mass in an atom.
• A proton has mass about the same as the
neutron
• The mass of a proton is about 2000 time that
of an electron.
• The volume of the nucleus is about 100,00
time smaller than the whole atom.
properties
• The proton has a
- positive charge about the same
magnitude as the negative charge of the
electron.
- mass of about 1 atomic mass unit (amu)
that is equivalent to about 1.7X10-27 kg
