Activity
SPI 0807.9.1 (Atoms)
SPI 0807.9.9 (Per Table)
Science
1) Now that we have learned about atoms, let’s do a
hands-on activity about atomic structure.
2) The teacher will place you into groups (2 to 4 students)
3) The teacher will give you the following materials
 Small dry-erase boards (one per group)
 Dry-erase markers and erasers (one per group)
 Sweet Tarts candy Do Not Put Them in Your Mouth!!!
 Each group will receive a container with three different
colored Sweet Tarts.
Do Not Eat the Sweet Tarts!
1) They are several years old.
2) They have been handled by many
different (unclean) hands.
3) They have been dropped on the floor.

Atoms
Task: Make a model of the atom shown below
1) First draw the nucleus and the electron shells
2) Use Sweet Tarts for your protons, neutrons, and electrons
3) Write the atomic number, and the name of this element
Hint: The atomic number is the number of protons!
4) Also write the chemical symbol and atomic mass
Note: Use a periodic table to help you
