Artificial snow? But why?
• Artificial snow is small particles of ice
• It is produced by a machine
• The first commercially successful machines
were developed in the 1950s.
• The water is mixed with compressed air and pumped
through a high powered fan.
• The fan can spray the mixture into the air.
• At this point the snow may be analyzed.

Too much water and energy is
needed.
• If you go on ski
slopes in summer
time, you can see
how much damage is
caused by skiing.
Resource conflicts in mountains
Conflicts occur between traditional primary activities such as farming
and developing economic activities that have a less environmentally
sustainable approach towards natural resources.
Natural resources are always limited
The demands of the tourism industry for water and snow are increasing
Simultaneously the climate change leads to less available water and natural
snow
The most water is needed in times of minimal
discharge
Rivers dry out
Consequences for the wildlife habitat
Thank you for your attention!
