• UniPID aims to strengthen universities’
global responsibility and advance their
interdisciplinary education, research,
societal impact and partnerships related to
global development issues

• Founded in 2002, coordinated by JYU/YFI from
2005
• Core funding from member university fees

– Currently partner in 2 EU projects and coordinator of

UniPID Virtual Studies
• New UniPID Virtual Studies Courses have been selected!
• The following courses will be added to the VS curriculum,
beginning in 2016-2017:
– Implications on Climate Change
– Migration, Development and Human Rights
– Global and Local Public Health Issues
– International Development Policy and Analysis and Public
Health in Humanitarian Crises will continue

Master’s Award in
Development Studies 2016
• Spread the word! UniPID and FSDR are looking for
exceptional MA level thesis to be awarded!
• The prize sum for the winner is 1,000 euros!
• The disciplines are not limited, but the work should
employ one of the development research frameworks
• Thesis should be approved during 1.8.2015 31.7.2016 at a UniPID University
• All submissions should be sent by email to the
secretary of the Master’s Award by 31 August, 2016
• Award Ceremony held during Development Day 2017

Finnish Development Research
Doctoral Network
• For doctoral candidates and supervisors
• To support the training and networking of
development research doctoral candidates
• The first cohort of 32 doctoral candidates
has been selected, and the call for new
members will be opened soon!
• The first DocNet get-together will be
organized in the Autumn!
FinCEAL Plus
• To support Finnish researchers focusing on
Africa, Asia and the LAC regions
– Themes related to global challenges: Food security,
Health, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Renewable energy,
Water management, Bioeconomy, and Information Society;
• Check out the new searchable map on the FinCEAL
Infobank!
• FinCEAL+ has opened targeted travel grants for
researchers in Finnish institutions working with
Africa, Asia and LAC to attend H2020 Info Days on
Societal Challenge 1 and Societal Challenge 2!

SIMHE UniPID– Supporting
Immigrants in Higher Education
• SIMHE fosters universities’ role in the integration of
immigrants by supporting their career and study paths;
• UniPID’s SIMHE-desk offers personal guidance and counceling
in higher education for adult immigrants at national level;
• Finnish universities and other stakeholders approached to
create a network of contact persons for immigrants’ access to
studies;
• The call for proposals for SIMHE Virtual Courses directed to
asylum seekers and immigrants will be opened in the
summer!
• Also a network of researchers focused on immigration issues
is on its way to be built!
UniPID + JYU/YFI
• JYU selected to coordinate UniPID for
2017-2020
• JY/UniPID board members 2015-2017: Tiina Kontinen
(YFI), Tuula Tuhkanen (BIOENV) and Pekka Toivanen
(MUSIC)
• Cooperation in JY especially with: D&IC MA
programme, Department of Education, international
affairs, Division of Strategic Planning and Development
