Island Migration in Transition: the
Mediterranean, North Atlantic and
South Pacific experiences
Chair: Dr. Nicola Piper
Arnold Bergstraesser Institute
Freiburg University
Germany
Introduction
„Island migration“ subject to various
academic and policy debates:
1. Migration-Development Nexus
Debate
→
relationship between migration and
development
→
remittances, brain drain
= migration from islands
Dr. Nicola Piper
2. Lifestyle migration or „retirement
migration“
→ „Brits abroad“
→ different „classes“ (the rich ex-banker, the drop-out)
= migration to islands
3. Climate change induced migration
→ sinking islands:
•
Pacific Island countries and other small island
states
• case of Vanuatu
→ socio-economic consequences
• re-settlement, „government-in-exile“
• impact on tourist industry
= migration from islands
Dr. Nicola Piper
4. Recent migration from North Africa to
islands in the EU
→ in light of political changes in North Africa
→ islands as transit destinations to EU mainland
= migration to and from islands
= negligence of other labour migration to EU island
states
Other gap:
Debates mostly ahistorical!
