Medical Alliance to Stop
Global Warming
A project of Student Physicians for Social
Responsibility & the American Medical Student
Association
How are humans contributing to
climate change?
• The levels of greenhouse
gases (CO2, methane) have
increased in the atmosphere
– Burning of fossil fuels
– Deforestation
– Livestock farming
How are humans contributing to
climate change?
• Data for the past
400,000 years shows a
clear correlation
between atmospheric
CO2 levels and global
temperature.
• The current levels of
CO2 are
unprecedented and
continue to rise, along
with temperature.
The impacts have begun…
• The WHO estimates more than 150,000
deaths and 5 million “disability adjusted
life years” (DALYs) occur EACH YEAR
due to the diseases and malnutrition
caused by climate change.
• WHO-estimated annual deaths are
estimated to double by 2030.
Global Environmental Justice?
 Developed nations are responsible for the
majority of greenhouse gas emissions…
however, developing nations will
experience greater impact from climate
change.
United States:
3% world’s population
~30% total emissions

Medical Alliance to Stop Global
Warming
• We are bringing medical students,
physicians, and other healthcare
professionals to the heart of the global
warming fight.
Healthcare Call to Action
• Petition for medical students,
physicians, nurses, and other
healthcare professionals.
• Calling on the United States
congress and administration to
take immediate action on climate
change.
• Deliver petition in Washington, DC
in April, 2008.
