Your Definition of Sustainability
Develop a personal rationale for integrating sustainability
education into curricula
Robert Gillman,
editor of the In
Context Magazine,
extends this goal
oriented definition by
stating "sustainability
refers to a very old
and simple concept
(The Golden
Rule)...do onto
future generations
as you would have
them do onto you."
The United Nations Definition of Sustainability
”Sustainable Development is development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs" Sustainable
development is a balance of three dimensions: Environmental
Protection, Economic Growth and Social Development.

What is Sustainability?
Understanding Sustainability … A Prerequisite for
all Green Jobs
Rising Above the Gathering Storm
Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future
Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century: An Agenda for
American Science and Technology, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of
Engineering, Institute of Medicine
FINDINGS
Having reviewed trends in the United States and abroad, the
committee is deeply concerned that the scientific and
technological building blocks critical to our economic
leadership are eroding at a time when many other nations are
gathering strength.
Definitions of Green Collar Worker:
green-collar worker is a worker who is employed in the
environmental sectors of the economy. Environmental greencollar workers (or Green Jobs) satisfy the demand for green
development. Generally, they implement environmentally
conscious design, policy, and technology to improve
conservation and sustainability.
Green jobs involve environmentally
friendly products and services or
businesses and organizations that
concern themselves with
improving the environment.
NJ BPU
Green jobs can be broadly defined as jobs

Rutgers
According to The Center for American Progress Green Recovery
Green Jobs will:
Create 2 million new jobs nationwide over two years
Reduce the unemployment rate
Bolster employment especially in construction and manufacturing
Provide opportunities to rebuild career ladders through training, retraining and
workforce development
Help lower oil prices
Contribute to the reconstruction of local communities and public infrastructure all
across America, setting us on a course for a long-term transition to a low-carbon
economy that increases our energy independence and helps fight global warming.
Green Jobs Forecast

postsecondary education. (a highly qualified green workforce)
• With new technologies, innovations and inventions on the horizon, many
green jobs do not exist yet and will need to be created to meet societal
needs
• Corporate and labor unions retraining programs
• Increased global population, a decrease of available resources and climate
change
The Road to Green Jobs
