Driving Sustainability Forward
Nicole Fletcher, Head of Sustainable Development
Our Fleet
World’s third largest fire and rescue
service, serving London with 5,500
fire-fighters
•
514 vehicles, some 300 frontline
pumps and specialist HGVs
•
Responsible for~21% of LFB’s CO2
emissions
•
Subject to Low Emission Zone and
Ultra Low Emission Zone requirements
LFB Sustainability Strategy
Aim
To maintain a leadership position on sustainable
development in the UK FRS
Policy
To mitigate our contribution to climate change
To lead on and promote responsible procurement
Target
45% CO2 reduction by 2020 from 1990 levels
Actions
To evaluate low emission vehicles for sustainability
benefits, performance and cost effectiveness
Improve the quality of data we hold on our fleet and air
quality
Early progress on emissions
Frontline vehicles
• Replacement and upgrades
with PM abatement traps in
2008 & 2012 as part of the
Low Emission Zone
• CO2 & NOx improvements
resulted from efficiency
through vehicle replacement
cycles and reductions in
vehicle numbers
The need for Innovation
Mileage
reduction
opportunities
were limited
Innovation
needed
Technological
improvement
was possible if
cost effective
and
operationally
compatible
Innovation

OJEU Prior Information Notice
issued & identified:
• lots of technologies
needing thorough review
• limited resources to
evaluate them
• Trials were essential to
demonstrate benefits &
value
European Project Funding
• EC Enterprise & Industry Directorate: Public Procurement
of Innovation funding call in 2011
• 2-4 year project,
• Funding for 95% of project costs and procurement of
innovation
• Target sectors: climate change, energy and resource
scarcity, health and ageing
Benefits of EC funding
• Addressed the issues around resources & trials
• Enabled support from management to establish a project
• Raised the need to address vehicle emissions up the
agenda
• Collaboration provided links to other organisations:
• widening the scope for research, support and
understanding of the wider fire markets needs
• providing a more attractive offer to suppliers
• Better dissemination of outcomes to benefit more FRS’
and public procurers
Recent Progress on emissions
• 80 EV Chargepoints installed
(9 publicly accessible)
• Aiming for an all EV car fleet
via our 2015/16 car
replacement cycle
• Testing Selective Catalytic
Reduction equipment to
reduce NOx
• Future aspirations for a low
emission pumping appliance
Thank you
