HOW TO MAKE A
DINOSAUR DIORAMA
BY
RHONDA OXMAN
THEME IDEAS OF A DIORAMA
• THE BIGGEST POINT OF A SHOEBOX
DIORAMA IS TO SHOW A NATURAL
HABITAT OF YOUR PROJECT.
• THE FOCUS OF A DIORAMA IS OFTEN
TO CORRECTLY IDENTIFY AND PLACE
THE CORRECT OBJECTS FOR A
NATURAL HABITAT.
• IT IS A FOCUS OF A MOMENT IN TIME.
ITEMS YOU WILL NEED
• 5 OR 6 SMALL ROCKS
• 5 SMALL PICTURES OF DINOSAURS
OR PLASTIC DINOSAURS
• SMALL PIECES OF LIGHT WEIGHT
CARDBOARD ABOUT 5 INCHES
SQUARE
• BITS OF GRASS, DIRT AND LEAVES
• ONE SHOEBOX
• SCISSORS AND GLUE
PREPARING THE SHOEBOX
1. CUT A 1 INCH HOLE AT THE SHORTER END OF THE
SHOE BOX. THE HOLE SHOULD BE ABOUT I INCH
FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX.
2. POUR SOME WHITE GLUE INTO THE ENTIRE
BOTTOM OF THE BOX.
3. DUMP THE DIRT INTO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX
4. BEFORE THE GLUE DRIES. TILT THE BOX BACK
AND FORTH SO THE DIRT WILL STICK TO THE BOX
5. REMOVE EXCESS DIRT
PREPARING THE SHOEBOX
6. CUT PICTURES OF VEGETATION AND PASTE THE
PICTURES IN THE INTERIOR OF THE BOX.
1. BE SURE TO COVER ALL OF THE INTERIOR SIDES OF THE
BOX SO THE SIDES LOOK LIKE THEY ARE COVERED WITH
DENSE VEGETATION.
PREPARING THE INTERIOR OF
THE BOX
1. GLUE THE ROCKS INTO PLACE ON THE BOTTOM
OF THE BOX.
1. SCATTER THEM AROUND AS THIS WILL BE PART OF THE
SCENERY SURROUNDING THE DINASAURS.
2. CUT 5 RIGHT TRIANGLES FROM CARDBOARD IF
YOU ARE USING PAPER DINASAURS.
3. RUN A STRIP OF GLUE ALONG ONE SIDE OF EACH
TRIANGLE AND GLUE TO THE BACK OF EACH
DINOSAUR. THIS WILL HELP KEEP EACH
DINOSAUR UPRIGHT.
ASSEMBLE THE DIORAMA
1. GLUE THE PAPER OR PLASTIC DINOSAURS INTO PLACE
2. GLUE BITS OF GRASS AND LEAVES IN PLACE AROUND THE
DINOSAURS. THIS WILL BE 3 DIMENSIONAL VEGETATION.
3. PAY ATTENTION TO THE LAYOUT OF THE DINOSAURS,
ROCKS, GRASS AND LEAVES. GROUP SOME DINOSAURS IN A
REALISTIC CLUSTER AND MAKE SOME LOOK AS THOUGH
THEY ARE EMERGING FROM BEHIND ROCKS
4. VIEW THE DIORAMA THROUGH THE HOLE YOU PREVIOUSLY
MADE.
DINOSAUR LEARNING SHEET
•
THE AGE OF THE DINOSAUR IS KNOWN AS THE MESOZOIC ERA.
THIS ERA LASTED ABOUT 180 MILLION YEARS BEGINNING ABOUT
250 MILLION YEARS AGO ENDING ABOU 65 MILLION YEARS AGO.
•
THE MESOZOIC ERA IS BROKEN UP INTO 3 DIFFERENT PERIODS OF
TIME CALLED THE TRIASSIC PERIOD, THE JURASSIC PERIOD AND
THE CRETUCEOUS PERIOD.
•
DINOSAURS THEMSELVES SURVIVED AND THRIVED THROUGH MOST
OF THE MESOZOIC ERA UNTIL THEIR EXTINCTION ABOUT 65 MILLION
YEARS AGO
.
•
DINOSAURS WERE THE LARGEST, MOST MASSIVE AND HEAVIEST
CREATURES EVER TO EXIST AND SOME SPECIES GREW TO A
LENGTH OF 90 FEET. NOT ALL DINOSAURS WERE LARGE. THEY DID
NOT COME IN A WIDE VARIETY OF SHAPES AND SIZES AND THE
WANNANOSAURUS GREW TO A LENGTH OF 2 FEET BEING THE
SMALLEST DINASAUR.
Extinction of Dinosaurs
• Extinction of Dinosaurs
– We don’t know for sure how dinosaurs became extinct but there are
currently two leading theories.
– A large meteor impacted with the Earth that caused a catastrophic
climate change. In this climate change dinosaurs no longer could exist.
– A Super volcano or series of volcanoes erupted causing massive
climate change.
– It is believed that one of these events caused massive climate change
on the Earth. One of the leading ideas is that the Earth’s atmosphere
was covered over in a cloud that didn’t allow sunlight through. This lack
of sunlight caused much of the plant life to die. With no plant life the
herbivore dinosaurs died. And with no herbivores to eat the carnivores
died too.
