EROSION
All the natural
processes that
wear away earth
and rock.
Sometimes fossils
are uncovered by
erosion caused by
wind or rain.
EVIDENCE
The data used to
draw a conclusion
What have you
learned about this
dinosaur from the
evidence you’ve
found so far?
EXCAVATION
The process of
finding something
by digging for it.
What did you find on
your recent
excavation of the
land?
EXTINCT
No longer living on
the earth; having
died out.
Why do you think
dinosaurs became
extinct?
FOSSILS
The hardened
remains of animals
or plants of
prehistoric times.
The scientists
examined many
fossils.
GEOLOGISTS
Scientists who study
the earth’s crust and
its rocks.
There is a team of
geologists working at
the site digging up
fossils.
HYPOTHESES
Scientific
suggestions, based
on what is known
so far.
We have several
hypotheses about
what it looked like
and what it ate.
PALEONTOLOGIST
A scientist who
studies
prehistoric life.
A paleontologist’s
tools include
hammers, brushes
and chisels.
SPECIMENS
Samples taken
for scientific
study.
They gathered
specimens of
dinosaurs.
THEORY
A widely held
scientific explanation
that is based on
evidence but cannot
be stated as fact.
Scientists have many
theories about the
disappearance of
dinosaurs.
