Day 3
Evolution Part II
Agenda:
1. Fossils
2. Relative dating activity
3. Radioactive decay activity
Warm-up:
What percentage of species have gone extinct in Earth’s history?
Fossils
• History of Life: 99% of all species that have lived on
Earth are extinct.
• Fossil: Preserved remains or traces of organisms from
the past. (Latin meaning "having been dug up")
• Principle of superposition: Sedimentary layers are
deposited with the oldest on the bottom and the
youngest on the top.
• Relative dating: the age of a fossil is determined by
comparing it to fossils in other layers of rock.
• Index fossils: super-abundant fossils that can be used to
date particular rocks.
Radioactive Dating
• Some elements are radioactive and steadily break down into a nonradioactive form. This can be used to measure time.
• Parent isotope: the initial form of the element
• Daughter isotope: the form after it has “decayed”
• Half-life is the length of time required for half of the radioactive atoms in
a sample to change.
