LEARNE
D.
What are dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs are part of the reptile family.
They lived before people were on Earth.
Dinosaurs all had different characteristics.
Some dinosaurs were huge, some were tiny.
Some dinosaurs had armor plates, some had
sharp teeth,
some ran really fast.
Some ate meat (carnivores), some ate plants
(herbivores),
and some ate both (omnivores).
Carnivores
(Meat Eaters)
Only ate meat (usually other dinosaurs).
Have sharp, pointed teeth and powerful
jaws.
Examples: Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus Rex
Herbivores
(Plant Eaters)
Only ate plants (like leaves and flowers).
Had small, flat teeth that were good for
chewing plants.
There were more herbivores than
carnivores.
Examples: Triceratops, Stegosaurus
When did dinosaurs live?
Dinosaurs lived from 225 to 65 million years
ago during the Mesozoic Era, or the Age of
the Dinosaurs.
This was split into three periods: First the Triassic
Period,
then the Jurassic Period, and lastly
the Cretaceous
Period.
How long ago was that?
What did they look like?
We don’t know for sure since there are no
pictures.
They could have had funny patterns, strange
skin, or look exactly the way we see in
movies and drawings – we just don’t know for
sure.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Stegosaurus
Triceratops
Saurolophus
How do we know all this?
We learn everything about dinosaurs
through fossils!
You’ll learn more about fossils next week!
