Siemens research series on “Sustainable
Urban Infrastructure” -- Contributing to the debate
Research on sustainable urban infrastructure
Approach
 Research undertaken by independent
partners (e.g. McKinsey & Company,
The Economist Intelligence Unit,
Wuppertal Institute for Climate,
Environment and Energy) in
cooperation with Siemens
 Evaluation fields:
 Cities’ most pressing infrastructure
needs
 Ways towards greater urban
sustainability
 Technological levers for increased
resource efficiency
 Economic implications

About the Survey
 Online survey of 140 cities, from
late April to mid-May 2009
 Questionnaire developed by
USCM, together with Siemens
and GlobeScan
 Respondents represent a good
mix of US cities

June 2009
Key Findings
5

Single greatest infrastructure challenge – raised by three in five
respondents (59%) - is obtaining the funding to meet infrastructure
needs

Transportation (including streets/highways and public transit) is area
of infrastructure that cities would most like to see targeted by stimulus
funding

Respondents identify improvements to public transportation as the
most promising policy measure for cities to reduce their contribution
to climate change

One-third of cities within the same region are already seeing greater
collaboration due to the economic crisis and climate change
