WHEN BUCK AND HIS TEAM ENTER DAWSON CITY,
THEY ARE COMPLETELY WORN OUT, EXHAUSTED.
Review the basis of this story:
Jack London spent a year in the
Yukon. He didn’t find gold, but he
watched the people that came
and he listened to the stories they
told.
CHAPTER 5 : THE TOIL OF TRACE AND TRAIL
THE GREENHORNS
Charles is Mercedes’ husband,
Middle aged, weak
(London 109)
Hal, is Mercede’s younger brother. 19 or 20,
callow, mean. (London 109)
Mercedes, the wife & sister, much
younger than Charles.
(London 111 – 113)
MERCEDES IS A STEREOTYPICAL WEALTHY YOUNG LADY FROM 1900.
She is the only female character (other than the dogs) in the novel.
As a young lady raised in a wealthy home Mercedes would have been taught
How to play classical music,
how to sing,
how to draw,
how to dance (ballroom dancing)
how to flirt
how to recite poetry
how to speak French
how to maintain proper etiquette (manners)
how to appear dainty and delicate, NOT healthy or athletic
how to marry well (a respectable man with positive financial prospects).
how to hire and manage the cook, maids, seamstresses and nanny
how to dress appropriately for any occasion
how to convince the men in her life (father, husband, brother) to do what she wants,
while
assuring the men that they are in charge and must take care of her.
SHE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO TAKE CARE OF HERSELF
OR EVEN THAT SHE SHOULD TAKE CARE OF HERSELF.
SHE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TEAMWORK
