• The word genre is a French word that means
“type” or “kind”.

• Definition – Shortened form of writing.
• Focuses on authors expression of feelings and
opinions.
• Usually follows a certain form/structure.
• Some poems have a unique shape.
• Some poems use words that rhyme to create a
certain effect.
• Sometimes poets use repetition of sounds or
patterns to create a musical effect in their poems.

Science Fiction
• Definition – Stories about the science and
technology of the future.
• A lot like fantasy
• Focused more on science than magic
• Characters: Talking robots, mad scientist
• Setting: City in space, Mad scientist’s lab

• Definition – Type of fiction in which a detective
solves a crime, or a series of crimes.
• Can also be called detective or crime novels.
• Characters: Detectives, investigators, spies.
• Setting: Crime scene, detective agency, old house
• Plot: Crime or mysterious events, clues = solution
