Climate changes Spatial Planning
- main goals • Offer the Dutch government, the private sector and other
stakeholders a clustered, high-quality and accessible
knowledge infrastructure on the interface of climate
change and spatial planning
• Engage in a dialogue between stakeholders to develop
innovative integral approaches of spatial planning and
land use that anticipate for climate change and
contribute to a safe, sustainable and resilient socioeconomic infrastructure in the Netherlands

Climate changes Spatial Planning
- data portal (1) Objectives COM-1 project:
• provide a central point (Virtual Data Centre) for project members
and external users to access (consolidated) data products that are
created by projects in adaptation, mitigation and climate scenarios.
• consolidation (in time and space) of data and model results
(depending on user demands and in cooperation with the projects
involved)

Climate changes Spatial Planning
- data portal (2) What does this mean ?
• COM-1 provide services to assist program projects to make their
scientific results available to users
• COM-1 does not provide a physical data centre, but integrates
the data stores from the projects
• Projects have the freedom and obligation to manage their own
data, COM-1 provides a common point of access

Climate changes Spatial Planning
- data portal (3) What are the benefits ?
• Improved exchange of information between projects
• Economy of scale
– Not every project has to develop its own access technology
– This allows development of better access for users
• (New forms of) collaboration possible
– Modern technologies enable better collaboration
– Sharing not only data, but also models and tools

Climate changes Spatial Planning
- data portal (4) the central point of contact (website) is a Catalog of data products
– shows what instances of data products are available
– has a search that produces a list of data products that match
user-specified criteria
– provides identification of the actual data products
– is accessible through the internet
Catalog searches through metadata!
Correct definition of metadata is essential !

CESAR
database management system
CESAR:
- consortium of 7 Dutch institutes
- wide range of atmospheric and hydrological observations
- long term monitoring (> 10 years)
- host for measurement campaigns
- partner and important data provider
in “Climate changes Spatial Planning” program
3-4 october 2006
ADAGUC symposium KNMI
CESAR
- surface and tower observations -

CESAR
- database management system objectives:
- facilitate data exchange between members
- harmonize data distribution
- support access by (web) portals ( eg. COM-1 project)
user community:
- projects e.g. BSIK-KvR, CEOP, KODAC, BSRN..
- individual researchers
3-4 october 2006
ADAGUC symposium KNMI
CESAR
- database management system present status:
- data policy established
- file format selected (netCDF)
- filename convention defined
- variable name based on CF-1 convention
- metadata should comply with Dutch Core Set Metadata
- access via web portal (and ftp for privileged users)
3-4 october 2006
ADAGUC symposium KNMI
to conclude:
- (definition of) metadata important ! (use standards)
- build/use generic interface between (meta)database and portal(s)
- provide conversion tools for data-providers?
