WATER MANAGEMENT: How can water management be sustainable for the future? We can’t keep blaming “freak weather conditions”! Base Leeds CR • Marshalls head office is based in Elland, in the Calder valley. • This year, the Calder valley has been subject to some of the worst flooding in recent history Base Leeds CR We put this short film together about the floods… Note from Base: Please view the film using the link below, the file is too large to embed into this powerpoint http://www.youtube.com/marshallsgroup Base Leeds CR • Our objectives: – To keep flooding on the agenda: just because the water’s gone away, it doesn’t mean that the problem has too! – To advocate sustainable landscaping: by adopting simple and cost effective SUDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage) techniques, we can mitigate the worst effects of flooding. – To give something back to the community: flooding devastates communities and businesses. Base Leeds CR • We understand that soft SUDs (attenuation ponds, swales, trenches etc) need to co-exist with hard SUDs (permeable paving) • We need to work with architects, local authorities and particularly SABs (SUDS Approval Bodies) to help them to understand this fast evolving philosophy • We need clear guidance and legislation to work towards (the National SUDs Standards, for example, have still yet to be released).
