
Our shared goal is to help combat the
harmful effects on development when
national resources and revenues are
misused.

Chairs report from South Sea Island
Summit. 2004


We just completed a very successful
summit. The nations of the G8 are united in
our desire to help bring stability and
democracy to Iraq.

Summit

Finally, we moved forward on our common
efforts to make the world not only safer, but
better. We launched a new effort to train
and equip 75 000 peacekeepers over the
next five years to help bring stability and
security to troubled regions, with an initial
focus on the continent of Africa.


It is morally right that we extend
democracy, cut poverty, remove the causes
of conflict and instability and bring the hope
of advancement to all nations
Tony Blair speech on G8, Sep 2004
US managed to persuade the rest of the
countries to support the war in Iraq.
After a year of escalating violence,
stability and democracy in Iraq are as far
away as ever. Meanwhile, corporations
such as Haliburton, continue to profit
from lucrative reconstruction contracts.
Lipservice to morality and justice masks
the hegemonic politics of war, control
and big business.
From the perspective of the G8
countries, harmful effects on
development are harmful on their
business interests and investments.
Their goal is to ensure that national
resources are used in a way that is
favorable to them.
The G8 identified Africa as the region
with great development potential. Africa
has a wealth of exploitable natural
resources and potentially huge market
for consumer items. The instability of
the region needs to be underpinned by
force.
