INTEGRATING THE ARTS WITH
TECHNOLOGY: INSPIRING
CREATIVITY
HALEIGH LANHAM
WHY IS MUSIC AND THE ARTS IMPORTANT IN
SCHOOLS?
•
•
It enhances self-confidence and self-esteem.
•
Provides a sense of belonging and a way to diffuse a sense of isolation within the
lives of students with disabilities.
•
The arts help students make connections between school subjects such as math,
English, and science.
Students at-risk for dropping out of school that participate in arts and music
programs retrieve a positive attitude about their future, improve their academic
achievement, and are more likely to stay out of trouble.
MUSIC AND THE ARTS HELP…
• Reach students with a different academic approach.
• Students connect with themselves and each other.
• Provide new tasks and challenges for those who are already successful.
• Connect learning experiences to work in the real world.
MUSIC RELEVANCE
• Studies have shown that music helps enhance language development during
the process of teaching students about rhythm, pitch, and sound. Rhythm helps
students with phonological awareness and other components of reading.
• Repetition in songs can help students to memorize academic facts; thus helping
students to make connections with other academic subjects.
TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION IN MUSIC
• JamStudio
• Rock Our World
• Theta Music Trainer
• Apps
• Flashnote Derby
• Sound Recall
JAMSTUDIO
• JamStudio is an Adobe Flash based website that helps students to create
music by allowing them to mix different instruments (guitars, drums, bass) and
then save their creations through mp3 files.
ROCK OUR WORLD
• Rock Our World connects students and teachers in composing music, creating
movies, and sharing their creations globally.
• Each country creates a 30 second drum beat and every week the drum
rotates to another country while other instruments are being added. It
eventually makes its way back to the original country; thus, touching students
with music all over the world.
THETA MUSIC TRAINER
• Theta Music Trainer is a site that consists of games designed to enhance
students sense of pitch and tone, their eye for hidden patterns in music, and
strengthen music theory skills.
FLASHNOTE DERBY
• Flashnote Derby is an app recommended for students 5-11. This app is a fun
game that helps students learn notes, clefs, and improves their speed of note
recognition.
• When playing the game, students are provided with the notes and a time limit
depending on which level you select. The jockey will move ahead on his horse
is the are correct in selecting and identifying the right notes.
SOUND RECALL
• Sound Recall is an app that allows children to memorize a growing sequence
of pitches being played.
• There are 5 shapes in the bottom of the screen. A firefly listens to you repeat
the pitches. If you are correct, more pitches are added to stimulate your brain
and help gain memorization skills.
REFLECTION
• Reading this article sparked my curiosity as to why relevance of music is being
questioned in the schools. Integrating technology into music strengthens the
program, provides more opportunities to learn, and changes up the way
students view musical challenges.
• I will most likely use Theta music trainer and jamstudio most frequently
throughout my teaching career.
