
can be a POSITIVE
 YOU WANT TO SUCCEED – YOU WANT TO DO THE
BEST YOU CAN
 YOUR BODY IS GEARING UP AND PREPARING FOR A
TIME OF UNCERTAINITY OR THE UNKNOWN – IT’S
WHAT HAPPEN’S JUST BEFORE NEW EXPERIENCE
`
 THE UNKNOWN…
Will I remember the answers during my exams? What happens
if I don’t get the ATAR score I want? Should I go for a ATAR score?
Have I picked the right subjects to get into a job/University
Do I have what it takes? Will I get my VCE/VCAL - VET Certificates
It’s time to check the facts
Let’s check the
 No other position requires 12 years training – You have passed the
training!
 No body else did it for you – that’s why you’re the one sitting and
listening to this
 There are the footsteps and experience of others for you to rely upon
and follow for your success – you don’t have to invent anything – just dip
into the experience of your teachers, parents, those who have gone
before you, just about any one who cares for you
 Most of all TRUST and BELIEVE in your self
Let’s check the
 You already have the tool kit for success – you know how to
write, read, research, talk, walk, draw, have an opinion, use a
computer, add and subtract, understand how to use money,
organise transport, use a variety of social medias, borrow a book,
write an essay, ask questions, dress yourself, cook and organise
food for yourself, arrange transport to get you places, decide
who makes a good, or not so good friend, follow road rules, know
what’s legal/illegal, public speaking, write reports, communicate
ideas, use paper and pens, problem solve………
And there is
 ….. read and/or write poetry, transfer money electronically, dance,
sing, take a bath or shower, comb your own hair, follow a recipe,
learn road laws for a learner’ permit, ride a bike or a motor bike,
write letters and notes, summarise notes, use dot points to
remember important things, make lists, pack a bag, empty a bag, fill
a bag, boil an egg, make a sandwich, kick a ball, play a variety of
sports, work in teams, and at times, able to do things all by yourself,
use tools of all sorts (e.g. compass, wood/metal work tools), build
things (at sometime you played with Lego), express feelings, bought
a ticket, booked in a concert on-line, used E-Bay, sold and bought
‘stuff’, streamed a movie, download music….
And there is more
 Asked for extensions for late work, negotiated another due
date, done exams, revised work, answered questions – and
got the right answers, learnt from mistakes, did ‘something’
you were afraid or unsure of, but did it anyway, found out
you CAN swim, dive, play an instrument, make people
laugh, be picked for a team sport, fix your computer, send
work via emails, use an electronic dictionary, access spell
check, prepare and /or follow power points, ask for help,
follow medication requirements, dye your hair……
And there is more
 Ask to copy notes from a friend because you missed a class,
used the library for study, borrowed books, cut and pasted
pictures or data into project work, put your hand up to ask and
get help..(KEEP DOING THIS)..got a surprise when you did better
than you thought, born with a brain that allows you to think,
breathe, feel, move, remember, sort, organise, arrange,
predict, estimate, calculate, accept or reject ideas,
manipulate concepts, visualise, tabulate figures, memorise,
repeat, express ideas/emotions, prioritise and organise
events/things…. HAVE I CONVINCED YOU YET?
YOU have all that it takes!
 BELIEVE..
Breathe in self belief. Breathe out self
doubt.
Success is the power of choice – if you believe
you can, you will, if you believe you can’t, you
won’t – both will be someone’s reality.
Understanding Self-Care
 Understand your personal response to stress/worry – more
active (flight/fight), avoidant(flight, doona therapy), unable to
sleep well, not as hungry
 Learn to read your body symptoms. Racing heart, sweats
 Acknowledge your stress – to yourself or to others. Don’t bottle
it in. It will only get worse. Feel it, express it, throw it away.
 Talk to GP/Counsellor/Teacher and get some advice or help.
There is a solution to the stressor.
 It’s not that you can’t handle stress – it’s just your body/mind is
telling you it is feeling overloaded and wants some rest and
time out
 It’s part of being human
Understanding Self-Care
 “STOP and STEP BACK”
 Slow down body and mind
 Take a break – go for walk, listen to music, play your guitar, arrange for a
game of tennis/footy, go for a run, have a hot chocolate with a melted
marshmallow
 Clear your mind.
 BREATHE. Slow down the release of cortisol in your body - and let your
body and left brain know that all is well and your back in control
Practical Solutions
 Prioritise your assignments/outcomes. Work steadily and
regularly. Set up a quiet study area – without distractions.
 Use a Study Planner/Diary. Start early.
 Learn to balance work, play, rest and study commitments
 Sleep and eat well (this fuels the brain and body)
 Avoid and/or minimise risks (use of alcohol, drugs, unhealthy
relationships)
 Don’t’ forget to enjoy life and have fun. Remember to laugh
 Talk to someone you trust about road blocks to your success.
Road blocks = conflicts in relationships, poor decisions/choices
made, family/personal problems – share the load
