Looking Forward
Alyson Dacey
'Decisions based on forensic examination of the
past give us what we've always had'.
The buildings we design now will shape learning
and teaching for the next century so it is
essential that we look to the future.

Flexible Rooms at Yale
• The need to increase room/resource
utilisation
• Reflect different learning preferences
• Reflect different teaching preferences
• Collaboration and Reflection

How and where do you learn best?
• Visually via demonstration, workshops etc
• I learn best with pictures and simplified instructions
and I also work best when I’m in a group
• I learn best in the classroom then if I have any
questions I am able to ask.
• Quiet. At a table. With coffee
• I learn in a hands on way
• With some epic tunes, even classical.. relaxing
• Sat in bedroom with music and coffee

What would you like to see in a flexible on-site
learning space?
What are the key ingredients to informal
learning spaces – maybe on-site or off-site?

In Summary...
Most important ingredients
Learning Spaces
• Technology may change
your buildings!
