MUSIC INDUSTRY
RESEARCH TASK
By Zachary Rockman
MUSIC INDUSTRY ROLES &
SECTORS OF WORK
• Artist Management- Management involves the politics of the industry. A manager is
required to dictate the manoeuvres of an artists career this is done through booking
gigs and/or tours, promotion and taking care of publicity as well as looking after and
having a personal relationship with the artist in order to assure they are meeting the
industry’s standards and their careers don’t turn stagnant. An artist manager deals
with the more mundane aspects of the industry such as dealing with lawyers, record
labels, producers and many other connections.
• Song writing/ Composition- Song writing and composition requires the actual writing
of the music. Song writing encompasses the lyrical aspect and composition the
actual music. Song writers and composers can either write lyrics/music for
themselves or other artists often known as the talent. For whichever non indivual
purposes they write for the songwriter and/or composer obtain royalty writes to that
piece of music be it for another artist, a film soundtrack or a television show.
• A&R(Artist and Repertoire)- The first link between an artist and a label is the A&R.
They are responsible for actually promoting the artist to a label and getting them
signed ASAP.
PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
• Merchandising- Merchandise is an important crossover product in the music
industry and doubles artist promotion and overall income from the product
of the artist/talent. An example of successful merchandising is Wu Tang
Brand. Originally Wu Wear back in the 90’s both forms of merchandise not
only made an impact upon the group’s salary but also became a staple in
streetwear and was a useful promotion medium.
• Instruments- instruments are a required component in order to make music
ranging from acoustic guitars to MPC drum machines. Software is also
required in order for produces to mix and master and isolate certain sounds
in order to add different effects.
INDUSTRY BODIES
• Industry bodies serve as a means of protection to an artist preventing them
from being cheated by their label and steering them clear of any foul play.
Industry bodies are like the trade union of the music industry making sure that
the artist gets a fair go. AMIN is an example of an Australian industry body
standing for Australian Music Industry Network. AMIN is a national platform for
as an association unified in the representation of artists in the Australian
music industry.
INTERRELATIONSHIPS
• Soundtrack- If a song is leased to a film company/crew for a soundtrack
royalties and credit must be paid to the artist in order for their song to be
used.
• Artists Representing Clothing Brands- Sometimes in contemporary music up
and coming small local clothing brands use artists to “rep” their products
giving their products a certain image because the artist is modelled wearing
them.
• Merchandise- Merchandise representing the actual artist themselves
enterprises as an interrelationship given that it serves as not only a source of
income for the artist but also a source of promotion.

ANGLES OF THE INDUSTRY
• There are many different angles and jobs available in the music industry
given that there are many different aspects and mediums of the art form.
• Smaller and less distinguished jobs such as stage lighting for live shows and
vinyl pressing and manufacturing are also angles of the music industry and
areas of employment.
WORKERS RIGHTS
• The music industry is entirely unprejudiced and therefore employment is indiscriminatory of race, gender, sexual orientation or religious views and/or
philosophical stand-points.
• Being allowed parental leave which is a general allowance in most jobs and
work places.
• Compassionate leave is a right granted to workers in the music industry. This
involves if a family member or love one has died and some time off is
required then it is granted to the worker.
CAREER IN THE INDUSTRY AND
MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
• Since a young age I have avidly listened to hip hop music. My passion initially
started simply with listening and eventually metamorphed into writing my
own raps. That passion has now driven me to learn how to produce my own
music in order to give it a final authentic touch. This would incorporate the
use of various software programs and electronic equipment such as
keyboards, samplers and drum machines.
• A career as a producer and recording artist would incorporate my passions
and aspirations.
