Heat-Related Illnesses
 Caused by overexposure to heat and dehydration.
 Loss of fluids and electrolytes.
 Who has an example of a heat-related illness?
 3 Types:
 Heat Cramps
 Heat Exhaustion
 Heat Stroke
Heat Cramps
 Painful muscle spasms typically in the legs or abdomen.
 Heat cramps are the least severe and first indication the body
is having trouble with the heat.
Heat Exhaustion
 Little more severe than heat cramps
 Signs
 Cool, moist skin
 Dizziness
 Nausea
 Exhaustion
Heat Stroke
 Least common
 Most severe
 High body temperature
 Vomiting
 Rapid pulse or breathing
 Changes in consciousness
 Life-threatening condition
 *Extremely red skin
What should you do for Heat-Related
Illnesses!?!
 Heat Cramps:
 Move to cool place
 Give sports drink, fruit juice, milk or water
 Heat Exhaustion
 Loosen or remove clothing
 Give Fluids-about 4 ounces every 15 minutes
 Heat Stroke





Call 9-1-1
Rapidly cool the body by immersing the person in cold water
Spray the person with cold water
Cover the person using bags of ice
Sponge the person with cold water
Cold-Related Emergencies
 Hypothermia: Lowering the body’s core temperature so that
function becomes impaired
 Hypothermia rangers from mild to sever, which can become
life threatening
 Signals Include:
 Shivering
 Numbness
 Glassy Stare
 If shivering stops and a person has not re-warmed,
its an emergency
Caring for Hypothermia
 Call 9-1-1
 Move the person to a warm place
 Remove wet clothing
 Warm the body gradually by wrapping person in blankets and
plastic sheets
 No caffeine or alcohol
Caring for Frostbite
 Do not re-warm if there is a chance of refreezing
 For mild frostbite, re-warm using skin to skin contact
 Serious Injury, soak in water no warmer than 105 F until
normal color returns (20-30)
 Do not break blisters
Seizures
 What is a seizure?
 Is also called a convulsions, which are when a person's body
shakes rapidly and uncontrollably
 Muscles contract and relax repeatedly.
 Let it happen
 Move anything that can harm the person away from them
 Do not HOLD them DOWN!
 Do not put anything in their mouth!
 Turn them onto their side
Dislocations
 Movement of a bone at a join away from its normal position.
 Usually a violent force tearing the ligaments from the bone.
Sprains
 Tearing of a ligament at a





Most of the time easily

Swelling may occur and can
be treated with ice and rest
If become active to soon
the ligament can heal

injury

Strain
 Stretching or tearing of a muscle or tendon
 Often caused by working a muscle to hard or lifting
something heavy.
 Can become reoccurring
 Muscle to bone
Type of Injuries
 Fractures: a complete
break, a chip or a crack in
the bone.
 Open Fracture: when the
bone breaks through the
skin
 Closed Fracture: when the
bone is damaged within the
body
What to look for
 Pain
 Swelling
 Lumps and bumps
 Bruises or depletions
 Unable to move the specific part
 Bones sticking out of the skin
 How it feels or sounds- snap, grinding, pop
 Area is cold, numb, tingly
When to call for help!
 Obvious deformity
 Snap or Pop
 Cold or numb
 Head, neck or spine injury
 If person can not move affected area
What to do until help arrives??
 R.I.C.E
 R. est – do not move or straighten the injured area
 I. mmobilize – stabilize the injured area in the position it was
found
 C. old- wrap the injured area for 20 minutes
 E. levate- the injured part only if it does not cause more pain!
