1) Heat cramps:
◦ least severe and usually first sign that the body is
having trouble with the heat

S&S:
◦ Painful muscle cramps usually in the legs and
abdomen

First aid:
◦ Rest in a cool place
◦ Have them drink cool water or a sports drink

2) Heat exhaustion:
◦ more severe than heat cramps

S&S:
◦ Cool, moist, pale, ashen or flush skin
◦ Headache; nausea; dizziness; weakness and
exhaustion


3) Heat Stroke:

S&S:
◦ Most severe and least common
◦ Body system is overwhelmed by heat and stops functioning

Rapid, weak pulse
Rapid, shallow breathing
First aid:
 Same as Exhaustion
 Only give sips of cool water
 Call 9-1-1 immediately
◦ The freezing of body parts
◦ Can cause the lose of fingers, toes, hands, feet,
arms and legs

Signs
◦ Lack of feeling in the affected area
◦ Skin appears waxy
◦ Cold to the touch or discolored

Treatment
◦ Gently warm area by soaking in warm water not
more than 105 degrees until color returns
◦ Loosely bandage with dry, sterile bandage
