Tissue
that makes the body
move.
Network of muscles include:
 Voluntary
muscles – muscles that must
be told to move
 Involuntary muscles – muscles that
move on their own
The
human body contains
more than 650 muscles.
They are all made of the
same material which is a
type of elastic.
Cardiac
Skeletal
Smooth
 Found
only in the heart (makes up
the heart)
 It is a “twitch” muscle; it only
performs short single contractions
 WHAT TYPE OF MUSCLE DO YOU
THINK THE CARDIAC MUSCLE IS?
INVOLUNTARY OR VOLUNTARY
 Muscles
that show you how strong you are
 aka – “striated muscle” – the light and dark
parts of muscle fibers make them look
striped
 Skeletal muscles are held to the bones by
tendons (cords made of tough tissue)
 Skeletal muscles work with your bones to
give your body power and strength
 This combination is referred to as
“musculoskeletal system”.
 VOLUNTARY OR INVOLUNTARY?
DELTOID
MUSCLE (SHOULDER)
PECTORALS (BOTH SIDES OF
UPPER CHEST)
ABDOMINALS (ABS)
BICEPS
QUADRICEPS (QUADS)
GLUTEUS MAXIMUS
 Your
brain and body tell these muscles
what to do
 Smooth muscles are at work all over your
body
Stomach and digestive system – they contract
(tighten up) to allow food to go through the
body
 Bladder – when relaxed (hold in urine); when
contract (let it out or “tinkle”)
INVOLUNTARY OR VOLUNTARY?
