HW: Ditto – Skeletal System Matching Column
Did you know…………….
• You have over 30 facial muscles which
create looks like surprise, happiness,
sadness, and frowning.
• Eye muscles are the busiest muscles
in the body. Scientists estimate they
may move more than 100,000 times a
day!
• The largest muscle in the body is the
gluteus maximus muscle in the
buttocks.
Function of • Locomotion
the muscular • Move by contracting
system
(shortening) and
relaxing
Difference
between
voluntary and
involuntary
muscles
• Voluntary
muscles: you are
able to control
–Examples: Arm & leg
muscles
• Involuntary muscles: you do
not control consciously (w/o
thinking about it)
–Example: Muscles that make
up your stomach & heart
3 TYPES OF MUSCLES
Smooth Muscle • Non-striated (no
stripes)
• Involuntary
• Line your
internal
organs
(digestive
system,
blood
vessels…)
Cardiac
Muscle
• ONLY in the HEART
• Involuntary
• Striated (have stripes)
• Fibers branch
Skeletal • Attached to bones
Muscle
• Voluntary
• Striated
• Work in pairs.
– One contracts while the other
relaxes
How do muscle cells get energy?
• Aerobic
respiration
(needs
oxygen)

Review: Identify the muscle being
described.
1. Involuntary
2. Striated
3. Found in the heart
4. Lines internal organs
5. Voluntary
6. Branched fibers
7. Attached to bones
