Muscular System
The muscular system is made up of all of the muscles
in a person’s body.
The main functions of the muscular system are:
1. Provide movement
2. Maintain body temperature
3. Maintain posture
 The muscular system connects to the skeletal
system via tendons (NOT ligaments…!)
FuNcTiOn 1: Movement
Muscles allow our skeletal system to move through contraction & relaxation.
FuNcTiOn 2: Body Temperature
Our muscles shiver to increase our body temperature when we are cold.
FuNcTiOn 3: Posture
Our muscles help us to stand tall.
Types of Muscle
1 Skeletal muscles work in pairs
 one muscle contracts while the
other one relaxes to move bones of
the skeletal system
 Contract means to tighten or
get shorter
 Relax means to loosen or get
longer
There are 3 types of
muscle fibers:
 skeletal muscle
 cardiac muscle
 smooth muscle
Cardiac Muscle
2• Cardiac muscle is found in the heart & helps pump blood
 We canNOT consciously control it…this is called
involuntary control
…opposite = voluntary control

•Shorter than skeletal muscle cells
•Have branches that join end to end
•Areas where branches join = gap junctions
•Gap junctions coordinate contraction so when
one cell contracts, others quickly follow
Smooth Muscle
3 Smooth muscle is found in digestive system & blood vessels
 It helps break down food and changes the size of blood
vessels to help us regulate body temperature

How do genetics affect athletics?
 Scientists want to know if race, gender, or
ethnicity play a role in the genetics that
account for the success of an athlete in a
particular sport
 Health & exercise are very lucrative
industries!
3 Types of Muscle Fibers
 Slow Twitch
– Type I
 Fast Twitch
– Type IIa
– Type IIb
 On average, humans have about 50% slow twitch
and 50% fast twitch fibers
 Our fiber type may influence the sports where we
are stronger
Type I
 Slow muscle contractions
 High resistance to fatigue…it takes a long time to get tired!
 Uses aerobic respiration
 Endurance performers have a higher percentage of slow
twitch fibers
– In the Olympics, marathon runners have had as much as 80% of their
muscle composition as slow twitch fibers
Type IIa
 Fast muscle contractions…between slow & really fast twitch fibers!
 Generates less force than Type IIb
 Uses some anaerobic & some aerobic respiration
 Type IIa fibers are utilized most during moderate exercise
such as swimming, ½ mile races, & long durations of weight
lifting
Type IIb
 Fastest muscle contractions
 Produce the most force and fatigue quickly…it does not take
long to get tired!
 Use anaerobic respiration
 Sprinters, shot putters, and 1 repetition maximum weight
lifters have an abundance of these fibers
– Olympic sprinters have as much as 80% fast twitch muscle
composition
Relative percentages of fast and slow twitch
fibers in a range of sporting activities
How do genetics affect athletics?
 While more research is being conducted, at this time,
scientists do not believe that you can just change
your fiber type from slow to fast twitch.
 However, it is believed Type IIa fibers can become
faster or slower depending on your training
schedule.
 Current research suggests you are born with a
specific amount of each fiber type and that’s how
you’ll stay.
