Health – Related Exercise
There are 5 components of health – related
exercise:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Cardiovascular fitness
Muscular Strength
Muscular Endurance
Flexibility
Body Composition
1. Cardiovascular Fitness
The ability to exercise the entire body
for long periods of time
Important in any long
distance event i.e. running,
swimming, cycling, and
rowing. Helps in many team
sports, as you are
expected to perform over
a long period of time.
2. Muscular Strength
The amount of force a muscle can exert
against a resistance
Important when a great
force is required i.e.
lifting heavy weights,
gymnastics holding a
position on the rings, or
a rugby player pushing in
a scrum.
3. Muscular Endurance
The ability to use the voluntary muscles
many times without getting tired
Allows muscles to be
used repeatedly without
getting tired. Important
for long – distance
sports such as
swimming, running and
cycling.
4. Flexibility
The range of movement possible at a joint
Means that the performer
can move easily and has a
good range of movement in
their joints e.g. swimmers
need flexibility in their
shoulders to get a good
reach in their stroke. Yoga
is a good activity to improve
flexibility.
5. Body Composition
The percentage of body weight that is
fat, muscle and bone
Having the best body shape for your sport
High Jumpers = Tall and slim
Sumo wrestlers = Heavy
Activity
For an activity of your choice, give 2 aspects of
health – related exercise that may be improved by
training (4 marks).
Example: Basketball
Health – related exercise
component
How performance is improved
Body Composition
Being tall, and having long arms, would
help him intercept and shoot the ball;
being tall and slim would also aid in
jumping.
Cardiovascular Fitness
This would allow him to keep running late
in the game and mark his man, and run
fast breaks later in the game.
