Objectives
• Describe what students are expected to
be able to do
Ex) When given a stick, be able to beat a
dead horse
• Different from course description –
which tells what a course is about
Ex) Review the many instructional media
resources that are available to classroom
teachers
Identify the objective
• Prepares students to meet the needs of
all learners in the classroom, including
those with special needs and the
exceptional learners.
• Design a curriculum which will meet
most of the instructional needs
represented in the classroom.
3 parts to an Instructional Objective

• Conditions
• Criteria (Assessment)
Performance
• Describes what the learner is expected
to be able to DO
• Visual – You must be able to observe a
behavior
Ex) Dance, interview, sing, write
• If overt behavior is expect (identify)
use a visible behavior when writing the
objective (circle)
• If the statement doesn’t have a visible
performance it is NOT an objective

• Describes the condition under which the
performance is expected to occur

Only use conditions when –
• Learners are expected to use something special
when performing a task
– Ex) A manual, a ruler, a tool, a form
• Learners are prohibited from using something
when completing a task
– Ex) calculator, notes, book
• Learners have to perform the task under special
conditions
– Ex) time restraints, in front of an audience, in a
cockpit

Criterion (Evaluation)

• Accuracy (how correct?)
• Quality ( instructor determines)
