Disorders of the
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
Let’s go over them together!
*MYASTHENIA GRAVIS
chronic neuromuscular disease ( = disease
of components of motor unit )
► Produce antibodies that bind to and block
some of the acetylcholine RECEPTORS
►
- affected muscles are paralyzed
*MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
dystrophy = degeneration
► Degeneration of myofibers leads to
►
* ATROPHY (decrease in size) of muscle
types:
Becker’s
Duchenne
*HYPERtonia vs. *HYPOtonia
► HYPER
► HYPO
(prefix means above)
= Increased muscle tone
(prefix means below)
= Decreased muscle tone
Abnormal Contractions
► *SPASM:
one muscle involuntarily contracts
► *CRAMP:
spasmodic contraction associated
with pain (usually caused by fatigue or strain)
► TIC:
involuntary twitching of muscles that are
normally under voluntary control (Ex: eyelid twitch)
► TREMOR:
quivering due to involuntary contraction
► Common
ex: teeth chattering
RUNNING INJURIES
► Common
sites include:
- *Knee
- Ankle
- Achilles tendon
- Hip
- Groin
- Foot
- Back
► R.I.C.E
Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
not heat!
“MYO” Conditions
► MYOPATHY:
MYO = muscle
PATHY = disease
Disease or disorder of SKELETAL MUSCLE
*MYALGIA
PAIN associated with muscles
(algia = pain)
FIBROmyalgia…
*MYOSITIS
► You
got it!
INFLAMMED myofibers
*MYOTONIA
► (tonos/tonia
► Tense/
= tension)
spasmodic muscle; not relaxing
Serious condition… but to end these disorders for
now on a “lighter” note:
