Essay Question:
• Discuss how technological developments
from 1450-1750 changed the Ottoman
Empires global influence. Be sure to
describe its position of power and influence
in the beginning of the period as your
starting point.

• Step 1: Break up the question
What key terms will need to be in your essay?
Choose ONE of the following political units, and
discuss how technological developments from
1450-1750 changed its global influences. Be sure
to describe its position of power and influence in
the beginning of the period as your starting point

• Build a frame work. The purpose of this is
make sure you do not leave anything out of
your essay.

What stayed the same?
What had the impact?
How was the political unit
impacted?
Step 3: Build your essay
• Fill in your graphic organizer with details
• This means, people, dates, places, names of
technology, ect.
Step 4: Write it
• First, you need to figure out if you want to say if
something had or did not have an impact. Once
you have done this:
– Rephrase the question as an answer; include all key
phrases
– Address each part of the question with a statement and
evidence
– Make the transition to the body of the essay with a
sentence like, “To better understand these changes we
need to look at the area prior to …”

• Your first paragraph is your THESIS paragraph,
which should contain that STRONG statement of
what you are going to write about.
• Second, write 4-6 paragraphs (Thesis, body, body,
body, Closing)
• Use transitional words and trigger words to
highlight important points

additional document as part of the question

Step 7: Writing and Thesis
• DBQ Thesis
– Open with something like, “After reviewing these document, it is
clear that…”
– Rephrase the question as an answer; include all key phrases. Write
your response to the answer
– Address each part of the question with a statement and a document
reference or an example (compare, contrast, and change over time
as appropriate
– Suggest, describe, and justify the inclusion of the additional
document as part of the last sentence
– Make the transition to the body of the essay by citing the additional
document: “ To better understand how these documents relate to
each other, a document about x would be useful.”

Compare and Contrast Essay
• Typically involves how two societies
responded to a major theme or event
– How different societies responded to each other
– How different societies changed-or didn’t -in
response to some event
– How different societies developed
– How different socieites responded to new
tehcnologies or new ideas
Step 1: Break apart the question
Music, art and literature often reflect the
changes within a culture. Compare and
contast the art, music and literature of the
Enlightenment period in Europe with
Tokugawa Japan. You should explain the
major themes in the socieites and how each
culture reacted to the changes of the time.
Be sure to explain how the art styles
differed or were the same.
