Thesis Statement

Claim
• Huck takes on a new sense of
morality because of the kindness he
sees in Jim.
Data
• Huck chooses not to turn Jim in to
Miss Watson because, “I’d see him
standing my watch on top of his’n,
‘stead of calling me, so I could go on
sleeping. . . [he] said I was the best
friend old Jim ever had in the
world”(Twain 235).
Warrant
• When Huck struggles with the dilemma of
whether or not to turn Jim in as a runaway
slave, he remembers all of the kind things
Jim has done for him. This leads Huck to
the realization that what society considers
moral may not be right for him. So,
ultimately, Huck chooses to, “. . . go to
hell!”(236) rather than turning Jim in to
Miss Watson.
