Nature of Essays!
• How many essays do you usually
write per semester, trimester, or
quarter?
• How long are these essays, pageand paragraph-wise?
Nature of Drafts!
• How long does it usually take you to
write a rough draft? How about a final
draft? How many drafts do you usually
write when composing an essay – and
why that number?
• When you’re writing new drafts of the
same paper, what do you find yourself
concentrating on changing? Word
choice? Paragraph structure? Cutting
old material? Adding new material?
• Do you find it difficult to make
changes to a rough draft? What about
a near-final draft?
Response to Advice
• Assuming you’ve had works edited by
your peers in the past, what sort of
advice do you find easy to follow?
What’s the toughest advice to follow,
and why?
• Do you re-read your work after you
print, but before you turn it in? How
about after your teachers return it? Do
you use teacher comments to improve
your writing, or do you avoid looking
at your old work when you start new
pieces?
Writing Process 101
• How much time usually passes
between the moment you receive
an essay prompt and the essay’s
due date? How much of that time
do you spend on essay writing
(the prewriting, re-reading,
drafting, editing, and writing
aspects)? When do you tend to
start?
• When do you produce your best
writing – early, late, under
pressure, etc.? How can you tell?
Writing Process 101 (II!)
• Where do you write? Describe the
room in as much detail as you can. Do
you have a desk? Do you use a
computer? Do you keep the lights on
or off when you write?
• Describe your writing process in as
much detail as possible. Do you listen
to music? Do you keep your book
open? Do you stay connected to the
Internet? Do you need to be alone, or
do you feel more comfortable when
working near company? Do you have
a “pre-writing” process?
You as Author
• How much time do you think you
spend each day “writing” (taking
notes, sending texts, finishing
assignments, etc.)? How much of this
time is spent writing voluntarily – the
things you want to write?
• Do you respect yourself as a writer –
would you want to read your own
work? Do you ever catch yourself
writing something that you think
someone else wants to read, rather
than writing something you want to
write? And are you ever reluctant to
write certain types of pieces?
