Theodore “Teddy” DeReese
Pendergrass was born on March
26,1950 in Philadelphia, PA. His
parents were Ida Geraldine Epps
and Jesse Pendergrass who was
murdered in 1962. Teddy started
singing gospel music in
Philadelphia churches.

ordained minister at age 10.
He later became a drummer
for a band, and then a lead
singer by age 15. Teddy
became a solo artist in 1977.
He was a famous R&B singer.
Teddy announced his
retirement from the music
industry in 2006.

car accident that damaged his spinal
cord. He was left paralyzed from
the waist down with limited use of
his arm. He was wheelchair bound.
Teddy was a quadriplegic. His first
thoracic vertebra (T1) was injured,
which affected his cervical spinal
nerves C1 to C8 causing him
paralysis of all four limbs.
