Week 30: Body Systems
Week: 30 Date: 3/30
Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Devise
Sarah is learning how to build and fix bicycles. First, she learned to change
a tire using a tier lever. (Pictured below) This tool’s structure – a lever with a
curved end – matches its function – to pry a tire off a metal rim. She’s also
learning about the interactions between the different bike parts – how the
chain, gears, wheels, and brakes all work together as a system.
Which structure below best matches the function of helping a fish to swim?
Scales
Gills
Fins
Eyes

Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Plot
Ash runs outside and plays tag with his sister. It is VERY hot
outside, and Ash is sweating a lot, his heart is beating faster,
and he is breathing faster! After about 30 minutes, Ash is
feeling VERY thirsty so he heads back inside and drinks A LOT
of water! About 30 minutes later, Ash needs to use the
restroom.
1.
Point out some examples where the body was maintaining homeostasis.
2.
Which body system is not involved in this scenario?

Respiratory
Excretory
Digestive
Circulatory
Nervous
Endocrine

Word of the day: Construct
An
infection by Taenia saginata, also
known as a tapeworm (Pictured Below),
affects the body’s ability to readily absorb
nutrients. Which body system is
responsible for absorbing nutrients, and
would be most affected by an infection
of T. saginata?
Week: 30 Date: 4/3
Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Invent
Use the descriptions of each structure to identify, by matching, the body system that it belongs to:
Structures
Small intestine (Absorbs Nutrients)
Artery (Transports blood away from heart)
Kidney (Filters blood and removes waste)
Spinal cord (Transmits electrical signals to and from brain)
Bone marrow (Produces blood cells)
Lungs (Take in oxygen)
White Blood Cell (WBC, Leukocyte: Fight infections)
Systems

Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Attribute
Misconception: The only gas you exhale is carbon dioxide.
Actually, about 16% of the air you exhale is oxygen. The air you inhale is made
up of about 21% oxygen. Your body only uses a small portion of the oxygen in
each breath, so the unused portion is exhaled. Sometimes this exhaled oxygen
can mean the difference between life and death. If a person stops breathing,
he or she needs to get more oxygen quickly. A rescuer can breathe into the
person’s mouth to give unused oxygen to the person. This process is called
rescue breathing.
Why would you want to learn to perform rescue breathing?
Week: 31 Date: 4/7
Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Trait
Interesting facts about the Musculoskeletal System
You have the same number of bones in your neck as a giraffe. However, a single bone in the
neck of a giraffe can be as long as 25 centimeters. (~10 inches)
You have 27 bones in each hand and 26 bones in each foot. They account for 106 of the more
than 200 bones in your body.
You do not have a funny bone. You have a sensitive spot on your elbow where a nerve passes
close to the skin. If you hit this spot, the area feels “funny.”
No one is truly “double-jointed.” People who are able to twist in weird directions have very
flexible joints.
Why do you think it is helpful for your hand to have 27 bones?
Week: 31 Date: 4/8
Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Symbol
Matching: Match the systems to one of their main functions.
Digestive System
Take in oxygen, remove CO2
Circulatory System
Absorbs nutrients
Nervous System
Transports oxygen, nutrients, waste
Excretory System
Removes waste from the body
Musculoskeletal System
Controls the body
Respiratory System
Allows for movement

Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Quirk
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
actively attacks white blood cells upon
infection. Eventually, the body identifies the
virus and the white blood cells begin killing the
virus. However, HIV is able to change its RNA to
make it harder to detect (like a bank robber
being able to change the type of car he’s in
during a getaway chase.) The body then needs
time to identify the virus again. Eventually, the
body loses this battle, and the virus kills off all of
the white blood cells, leaving the person very
vulnerable to infection. Which body system
does HIV impact directly?
Week: 32 Date: 4/15
Unit 7: Body Systems
Word of the day: Virtue
The kidneys and lungs both have the ability to remove waste from the
body. The kidneys filter out poisons and waste from the blood, and the
lungs exhale CO2. Both of these organs could be considered to be part of
the ___________ system.

Respiratory
Circulatory
Excretory
