contaminated water of food.

Cataracts: A furious rush of
river water.
The expedition ran into many cataracts on
the rivers, breaking oars and damaging
boats.
Abandon: to leave completely
and finally
The expedition had to
abandon much of their
equipment by the river
because it was
damaged.
Sustain: To supply with food
and other necessities of life.
Native Americans tried to sustain
themselves and preserve their
culture against great odds.
