The romantic style
Romanticism is a term
applied to the music, art
and literature of the mid-19th
century. Romantic music is
expressive and passionate.
The romantic style began
with Beethoven’s later
works and was developed
by composers such as
Mendelssohn, Berlioz,
Schubert and Schumann.

Programme music
Romantic composers liked to tell stories. They wrote pieces
of music that described scenes, images, places, moods and
emotions.
They gave their pieces
titles (rather than just
numbers) and wrote
programme notes that
told the listener what the
piece was about.
Some composers called
these pieces tone poems
or symphonic poems.
