Transcript Investigate how vibrations produce sound.
S1P1 Students will investigate light and sound.
c. Investigate how vibrations produce sound.
d. Differentiate between various sounds in terms of (pitch) high or low and (volume)
loud or soft.
Limited or Minimum Progress
toward achievement of
standard (1)
Student is not able to differentiate between various sounds.
Progressing toward
achievement of standard
Student inconsistently differentiates between pitch or volume.
(2)
Consistently and
independently achieves the
standard (3)
Student consistently and independently differentiates between
pitch and volume.
Note: Share these elements with music teacher to integrate this science concept
with music standards.
Assessment Activities
Show pictures of different objects that make sound. Have them sort by pitch and/or
volume.
Play an instrument and have students identify which part of the instrument vibrated.
Make a tape of different school sounds. As you play the tape have students identify
the sound in the science journal. Ask students to sort the sounds by pitch (high or
low) and volume (loud or soft ).
Instructional Notes:
Harcourt Science materials provides assessments for each element. In addition, each
school has a copy of Picture Perfect Science lessons.
Students should know:
things that make sounds vibrate.
sounds can be loud or soft.
sounds can have a high pitch or a low pitch.
size makes a difference in pitch.
