Clarifying When Team Members Must
Be Seen In Employee Health
General Statement:
1. If injured at work, or if an exposure occurs, notify
supervisor and seek medical attention as needed.
Employee Health (EH) can treat minor injuries,
whereas the ED can treat more-significant injuries.
2. As soon as reasonably possible, complete an
“Accident Report.”
3. As soon as reasonably possible, complete a “Be Safe
Event.”

Blood or Body Fluid Exposure (IPC Manual):
1. Wash, cleanse, and flush exposed area.
2. PIC 1523. The nurse covering the pager will provide
guidance.
3. Inform supervisor.
4. If time-sensitive prophylactic treatment indicated,
that will be addressed promptly.
5. If time-sensitive treatment not indicated, team
member should contact EH (4-2013)
within 24 hours for an initial appointment.

Infectious Disease Symptoms (IPC Manual):
1. If a team member has symptoms of an infectious
disease, they should contact EH (4-2013) to be
evaluated. If EH is closed, the team member should
go to the ED.
2. Examples include strep throat, infectious
conjunctivitis, flu-like illness, active gastroenteritis,
etc. A more detailed list is found here.
3. Evaluation will occur and any work restrictions will be
implemented.

Exposure to an Infectious Disease (IPC Manual):
1. If a team member is exposed to certain infectious
diseases, they should page the Infection Control
Practitioner on-call (pic 1243).
2. Examples include measles, meningococcal disease,
pertussis, tb, etc. A more detailed list is found here.
3. The exposure will be assessed and worked up.
4. If indicated, the team member will be advised to
contact EH (4-2013) for assessment, treatment, and
any work restrictions.

Lifting of Infectious Disease Work Restrictions
(IPC Manual):
1. If a team member has been placed on work
restrictions due to an infectious disease, they must be
evaluated by EH and cleared for release of the
restrictions.
2. The team member should contact EH (4-2013) to be
evaluated after symptoms have cleared or diseasespecific timeline has passed.

Exposure to a Hazardous Material (MC Policies 0054
and 0268):
1. If a team member is exposed to a hazardous
material, they should seek medical attention.
2. If the exposure is minor, team member can contact
EH (4-2013) to be evaluated.
3. If the exposure is significant or severe, the team
member should be evaluated and treated in the ED.

Team Member Injury (HR Policy 512):
1. If a team member is injured, they must fill out an
“Accident Report” and submit it to EH (or to their
employer’s HR contact).
2. They should also enter a “Be Safe Event” as soon as
reasonably possible.
3. Team members are not required to be seen at EH, if
they do not require treatment.

Team Member Injury Continued:
4. If emergency treatment is needed, they should be
seen in the ED. The team member should then follow
up with EH by phone (4-2013) the next business day.
5. For non-emergency, or ongoing, treatment, the team
member can select a Worker’s Compensation provider
from the employer’s Panel of Physicians. Medical
Center employees can elect to receive care from EH.
