10 THINGS I HATE
ABOUT YOU
What will this movie be
about?
Predict the plot in 2 - 3
sentences.
What clues does the poster provide
about the film?
How is what we know from this
poster, different to what the other
one told us? Write down the
additional facts this poster provides
Could this film be just
another example of the 'high
school romance genre'?
(genre means category)
List other
examples of
movies in this
genre in your
book. (at least 3)
Is it an example of the
'coming-of-age' genre? (i.e
young people transitioning
from adolescence to
adulthood.)
How does this movie fit into
this genre? Mention one
example where ‘coming of age’
seems to happen in the film. (If you
get stuck, get some help from the next slide.)
Need help? Select one of these commonly used features of a ‘coming of
age’ film from the list below, and find an example of it in 10 things I hate
about you.
This is a list of conventions for coming-of-age films:
 the use of cars to indicate status
 stereotyped students
 small towns are boring
 education is boring and teachers are stupid
 the revenge of the nerd
 a boyfriend/ girlfriend is essential
 having sex marks the initiation into adulthood
 parents are frequently inadequate and spoil their children's
lives by their stupid decisions
OR they are totally irrelevant to their lives


music helps teenagers to define and express themselves
males are the dominant sex; females exist only as objects of
their desires.
Interesting...
The movie is loosely adapted
from Shakespeare's play: The
Taming of the Shrew.
However, even though there is
much in it that is well suited to
modern beliefs and values ...
there are lots of ideas
that a modern audience
would find strange, for
example … (see next slide)
Bianca's speech Act 5 Scene
2 line 136:
"Fie, fie unfit that threatening unkind
brow...
Thy husband is the lord, thy life, thy
keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign;"
What do you think this means? Use this
link for a modern language translation of
the play http://nfs.sparknotes.com/shrew/page_246.html
Explain why would this not fit with
today's ideology (beliefs and values).
Things to think about when
watching:
The use of music in the film.
How information about the
characters is revealed
Camera shots for effect
Use of irony
Clothes/car symbolism

their stereotype?

CHARACTER
What is the first impression that you
get of these main characters?
Kat, Cameron, Patrick, Bianca. Write
one - two sentences on each, and try to
explain WHY you have formed this
impression.
Homework
Write Shakespeare’s sonnet 141 into your books. Here is a copy
of the poem:
In faith, I do not love thee with mine eyes,
For they in thee a thousand errors note;
But 'tis my heart that loves what they despise,
Who, in despite of view, is pleas'd to dote.
Nor are mine ears with thy tongue's tune delighted;
Not tender feeling, to base touches prone.
Nor taste nor smell desire to be invited
To any sensual feast with thee alone:
But my five wits nor my five senses can
Dissuade one foolish heart from serving thee,
Who leaves unsway'd the likeness of a man,
Thy proud heart's slave and vassal wretch to be:
Only my plague thus far I count my gain,
That she that makes me sin awards me pain.
